What Matters vs. What Is Supported? Research Competencies among Early-Stage Researchers: A Mentor Perspective

INTRODUCTION

This survey is conducted within the framework of the Horizon Europe SMART Researchers project, which focuses on strengthening research careers and improving institutional support for early-stage researchers across Europe.

Grounded in the European Competence Framework for Researchers (ResearchComp) , the survey explores a critical question: what competencies matter most for early-stage researchers—and to what extent are they truly supported in practice?

In this context, Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs) refer to individuals currently enrolled in doctoral studies, as well as those who have recently completed their PhD (within the last five years).

This survey is specifically addressed to mentors, supervisors, and senior researchers who play an active role in supporting ESR development.

For the purpose of this survey, mentors/supervisors are understood as individuals formally or informally involved in guiding early-stage researchers, including:

  • PhD supervisors or co-supervisors
  • research group leaders
  • project leaders or senior researchers providing guidance and support in research activities

⏱️ Estimated completion time: 10–15 minutes

Your perspective as a mentor is essential for understanding how research competencies are prioritized, developed, and supported within real academic and research environments.

    When answering:

    • focus on your actual mentoring and research experience
    • consider both formal support (e.g. courses, structured training, supervision) and informal support (e.g. mentoring, collaboration, project-based learning)
    • select the option that best reflects your overall experience
    • there are no right or wrong answers - we are interested in your informed professional judgment

    CONFIDENTIALITY

Your responses are fully anonymous and will be used exclusively for academic research and project-related analysis.
